Time: May 16, 2018
Abstract: CIPTC Bao’an Foreign Teacher Professional Development Training - Learning Circles
Address: CIPTC Bao’an Room& Fanshen Primary School & Bao'an No.1 Foreign Language School, Senior High School
This week’s Professional Development was separated into three different places. According to the grade taught by Foreign Teachers, they were divided into three Learning Circles. Mentor Amanda hosted the LC in CIPTC Bao’an room; Mentor Jack hosted the LC in Fanshen Primary School; Mentor Devon hosted the LC in Bao'an No.1 Foreign Language School, Senior High School. Compared with previous training, these learning circles were more targeted to teacher’s specific content base, smaller in size, and more efficient.
△ Three learning circles were held at the same time
The topic of this week was what to do when the technology failed in the classroom? That was a problem that Foreign Teachers often had in the classroom. Most computers had Chinese-language systems, which was difficult for Foreign Teachers to fix them when something was wrong with the computer. They needed help from others. Sometimes, even if someone helped, it didn’t work. So what should the Foreign Teachers do?
Primary school group
After discussion, the primary school group gave the following answers. The use of blackboard, body movement, storytelling, critical thinking and making a mini book that could be used at any level.
Junior high school group
The junior high school group's answers were similar to the primary school group, while they were not talking about a mini book, but the mobile phone. Mr. Newhouse said they could store backup in a mobile phone so that when the computer failed, they could still use the phone to check the PPT. Mr.Mather also shared a very good way that teachers could print out the PPT. Moreover, he thought that a teacher should actually be fully familiar with his own PPT, so he or she could still teach even without the PPT. In addition, other teachers also shared various methods such as English games, debate games and so on.
Senior high school group
Compared with the primary and junior high school groups, the activities of the senior high school were more abundant. Simple discussions were not enough for them; the teachers of the senior high school group practiced grammar techniques, effective writing activities for students and learned about the student union at the high school and their responsibilities.
CIPTC is constantly improving the delivery and content of the training to meet their teacher’s needs. This previous Learning Circles had also achieved very good results, but this time was even better. In the future, CIPTC will continue to look for more efficient, more professional training methods.
