CIPTC ‘Foreign Wanderers’ Football Team Match Report

April 2nd 2019

March proved to be a busy month for the Foreign Wanderers, playing a total of five matches as well as celebrating the team’s first year of existence.

The month started out tough for ‘The Wanderers’, narrowly losing their first game 3 - 2. This setback, however, did not dampen the team too much.

Their game on March 6, against a cohesive unit on a very wet surface, may not have been the prettiest to watch but the team dug in from the start taking a 1 - 0 lead. The opposition unfortunately pulled one back making it 1 - 1 with 20 minutes still to play. ‘The Wanderers’ went on the weather the storm of pressure on goal before going up the other end and scoring two fine finishes, winning the game 3 - 1.

The team’s match on March 17 proved to be one of the strangest matches of the season. It began with one of their poorest performances in the first half – lucky to only be 2 - 1 down – to producing one of their finest performances in the second half before going on to win 10 - 4 [Finn Thompson *5, JT *3 and Ryan Shaw *2].

What was noticeable about this performance was how well the team passed and moved the ball around the field, something they have been working on over the past few months.

With their confidence high, ‘The Wanderers’ went into their match on March 23 looking to extend their positive style of football further. However, the game did not start as expected, with ‘The Wanderers’ going 1 - 0 down against the run of play.

This did not affect ‘The Wanderers’ passing and movement of the ball with quality, as they created many opportunities to go level. The team kept being brave, knowing the goal would come, and it did five minutes into the second half through JT. ‘The Wanderers’ found another gear, scoring two quick goals from Ryan Shaw and Luke Short to take a 3 - 1 lead. ‘The Wanderers’ showed maturity throughout the rest of the match, keeping play simple and limiting the opposition to hopeful, long-distance shots.

On a three-game winning streak and confidence high, ‘The Wanderers’ wanted to put in a big performance in their last game before the Qing Mi Festival Break.

Even with a delayed kickoff, ‘The Wanderers’ continued with their fine fluid style of play, camping themselves in the opposition’s end for the majority of the first half. The opposition struggled to manage with ‘The Wanderers’ passing and moving tempo, and when they did win the ball, the team chased them down like a pack of wolves.

Although the team were happy with their performance, it took them until the second half to finally break the deadlock through their new player, Matthew JP. Ryan Shaw quickly doubled the lead shooting from distance out wide. Matthew Hunt then got in on the action, having a shot from distance beating the goalkeeper at his near post, before Matthew JP claimed his 2nd goal on his debut for the team. ‘The Wanderers’ finished the game off with Dan Milner scoring his first goal for the team, making it 5 - 0.

Overall, this has been a very positive month for the CIPTC Foreign Wanderers. They have shown a great quality of football and teamwork and look forward to starting again after the Qing Mi Festival
